The Laboratory of Biomedical Engineering carries out basic and empirical research and education in the field of medical informatics and telemedicine, in collaboration with national and international healthcare partners.
The courses we teach are unique on Biomedical Engineering in Bulgaria :
- The basis of Biomedical Engineering
- Devices for Medical Images
- Data Processing of Biomedical Signals
- New Technologies in Biomedical Engineering.
Five persons received PhD degree in the last five years. Currently, there are two PhD students working on ultra low power devices and the implementation of wireless data transfer for medical purposes.

The Laboratory main research areas are in the development of medical instrumentation and data processing of biomedical signals. Currently, the laboratory works on wireless data transfer of biomedical signals and development of portable ultra low power devices for fast non-invasive blood circulation detection (part of new developed wearable system).
Since 1999 the laboratory has very useful collaboration with National Laboratory of Biomedical engineering at the Bulgarian Academy of Science. Joint projects from the last two years are: “Development and experimental investigation of devise for electrochemotherapy” (in collaboration with National Oncology Institute), and “Development of new generation portable defibrillators” (in collaboration with Brucker Medical , France , and Schiller Medical , Switzerland ).
The head of the laboratory Ivo Iliev is MSc and PhD in electronics from the Technical University of Sofia. He is associate professor at the Faculty of electronics and part-time researcher in the National Laboratory of Biomedical Engineering at the Academy of sciences.
